Sabrina Carpenter: Redefining Stardom

Published September 24, 2024

I remember first seeing her on Disney channel, immediately becoming obsessed with her music video for “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying”. Sabrina Carpenter has been a well-known actress and singer since the premiere of “Girl Meets World” in 2014. Fast forward a decade, she has truly made the spark in her music career, embracing a flirtatious and bold image that has fans obsessed.

Contrary to the stereotype of spiraling into a phase of rebellion to diminish the childish reputation of Disney, Carpenter has used her platform to redefine her persona in a way that feels both authentic and refreshing. With her sweet, innocent appearance contrasting her shockingly explicit lyrics, she has undeniably left a memorable impression on the music industry. One of the standout features of her performances is the improvised endings to her song “Nonsense,” which change with each show, keeping fans excited to hear what she’ll come up with next. This might be a bit biased coming from a longtime fan, but I find her remarks hilarious and love how she adds a shock factor to her songs. One of her “less intense” endings is included below.

“Fell so hard for me he need a doctor/ he’s so hot he opened up my chakras/ y’all are too kawaii in Osaka” – Performance in Osaka, 2024

Her latest album, Short and Sweet, has been a tremendous success. As of August 2024, it topped Spotify’s charts as the number one album debut globally and in the U.S. Additionally, on September 11th, 2024, she performed some of her hit songs  “Espresso”, “Taste”, and “Please Please Please” for MTV’s Video Music Awards, where she rightfully won “Song of the Year” with “Espresso”—the first of what I’m sure will be many VMAs to come.

My favorite aspect of her aesthetic is the pastel color palette used throughout her appearance. The femininity she emits honestly inspires me to connect more with my femininity and embrace my girly side.

Known for his intricate designs featuring hearts and heart cutouts, Ukrainian designer Ivan Frolov’s creations have added a distinctive flair to Carpenter’s aesthetic. Frolov’s outfits, seen in various colors throughout her performances, include eye-catching corsets with a heart cutout embellished with shimmering jewels, perfectly representing her playful personality. He has also worked with several other stars including Dua Lipa, Madison Beer, and Beyonce. See more of Ivan Frolov here.

In terms of makeup looks, Sabrina incorporates pale pink blush and glitter that feeds into the pop princess persona she has developed through both her music and her visual appearance.

Sabrina has always embraced her femininity. In an interview with W Magazine,  she shared that as a little girl, she loved wearing heels to the point that they felt comfortable for her. To this day, she pairs her tall heels with a mini skirt during performances, joking about how they help her “see people eye-to-eye”, hence her album name Short and Sweet

Overall, Sabrina Carpenter’s ascent in the world of pop is a testament to her evolving artistry and the way she has managed to use her youthful charm to win the attention of fans. Her journey shows how an artist can grow, adapt, and redefine their brand while maintaining an authentic connection with their audience. The future looks incredibly bright for her—certainly sweet, and definitely not short!
